Passing Through (Copperwood no #) 1978

Three Of Us, The - Passing Through

The Three Of Us: Gregory Hunt, Robert Adorjan, and The Lord. Acoustic guitars (6 and 12-string) and synthesizers share center stage, making for an infectious melodic folk-rock sound that’s on par with (and often surpasses) artists like Stewart & Kyle, Albrecht Roley & Moore, Abraham & Moses and Christian Stephens. All self-written songs with skillful guitar interplay, ranging from brisk jangly numbers (‘He’s Coming With A Mighty Shout’, ‘He Lives Within My Soul’, ‘Blessed Trinity’), gentle acoustic ballads (‘Heather Renee’, ‘With Gifls Of Love’) and psychy dynamic minor-key moods (‘Deep Calleth Unto Deep’ and the apocalyptic ‘Revelation’). Neat harpsichord-like sounds coming from the synthesizer on the title track and ‘Everybody Needs Jesus’. Distant femme backing vocals on a few tracks. A custom-made record from California. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).

I have not acquired this album yet. Thank you Laura for locating the track list.

Come With Us! (High Life I-lL-1970) 1970?

Three Faces, The - Come With Us

From somewhere down in them Louisiana parts come these “three young Christians who aren’t afraid to set forth their beliefs in the sounds of both contemporary rock and religious folk music”. Low—budget ‘60s adult folk would seem to be the overriding vibe for these fellows, including covers of both popular songs (‘Traces’, ‘Sounds Of Silence’, ‘Never My Love’) and spiritual numbers (‘People Get Ready’, ‘Come With Me’, ‘I’d Rather Have Jesus’). Actually not too bad a record, much better than I expected. Joining the acoustic guitars and soft vocal harmonies are organ, electric bass, drums and female background vocals. The organ in particular gives their sound a slight edge. I found myself actually liking their unique home-grown versions of ‘Abraham, Martin & John’ and ‘Jesus Is A Soul Man’ — songs I usually don’t bat an eye at. Even the home-made trumpet backing on a couple of the songs seems to work well. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).

Return Sweet Gentle Dove (Sharing SC 011) 1980 UK *

Thompson, Bryan & Violet - Return Sweet Gentle Dove

UK male/female folk custom that packs a decent amount of charm despite the obvious primitive low-budget constraints. Very much a British folk sound, with acoustic guitars in the forefront, plus electric bass and periodic synthesizer. Drums are in there as well providing an occasional rock beat. The harmonies aren’t always perfectly on key, but the sincerity is most definitely there. The cheap quirky synthesizer is kind of fun as it perks up tracks like ‘Turn Around And Face The Sun’, ‘I See A Star’ and ‘Thank You Lord’. Features twelve songs, strummed upbeat numbers as well as delicate ballads, all written by Brian. Small home-grown UK Christian label with ties to the Sharon People. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).

This is one of Bob Morley’s albums that did not find it’s way into the archivist. When doing some research on a possible date for this album I made a bit of a trivia discovery for myself. This song was originally published in 1927 and became a song on the most popular songs list in 1958. It had been recorded numerous times by numerous artist since 1927. Can we take the Jesus music era back to 1927? :)

It was published in Spirituals Triumphant, Old and New by Edward Boatner. additional information can be found He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands on Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Also Edward Boatner can be found there as well.

Something To Quiet The Lion (Destiny D-2013-S) 1976

Thomas, Harry - Something To Quiet The Lion

Harry has the look of a Nashville gospel kind of guy. While his custom album is often smooth-voiced orchestrated MOR or easy steel-guitar country, he can occasionally be capable of more interesting things. ‘Quiet The Lion’, for example, is a fine growling rocker in the tradition of Barry McGuire, as is ‘Noah’ with its funk-edged groove. Musical backing is provided by the group Phoenix Sonshine, along with David Diggs, Al Perkins and Evan Williams. Features ten of Harry’s songs. Also listed in Harry’s credentials are Baptist pastor, disc-jockey and founder of Come Alive Ministries, Inc. in New Jersey. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).

Another competent can’t—complain co-ed ten-person folk outfit doin’ their thing with acoustic guitars, upright bass, tambourine, drums and piano. Like many Christian folk groups with this same lineup, these Colorado folks do entertaining strums through standards like ‘To Be Alive’, ‘He Ain’t Heavy’, ‘When The Ship Comes In’, ‘You Can Tell The World’, ‘Get Together’, etc. Heavy drums and skillful piano join in at times to add some pizzazz, standouts being their creative interpretations of ‘One In The Spirit’ and ‘Blind Man’, the latter featuring an extended jamming jazz section. The group was formed in 1969 with students from the University of Northern Colorado. One of the members is Chuck Bolte who later went on to lead the Jeremiah People (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).

Sing A New Hymn (Good Vibrations  GV—197) 1981

Third Day, The - Sing A New Hymn

Califomia’s The Third Day faithfully recalls the rnid-‘70s warm elegant folk style of Ellis & Lynch. The group consists of Bob Dean, Kristi Dean, Dean Hickman and Kris Hickman. Very simple and home-made, but effective, the delicate harmonies of the four carried along by two guitars, bass, percussion and dreamy flute. Features twelve original melodies, like ‘The Breaking Dawn’, ‘At Peace With The World’, ‘Reach The Promised Land’, ‘On The Third Day’, ‘Whole Once Again’ and ‘Eternal Freedom’. From a Catholic fellowship in San Diego. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).

A New Way Of Life Began (Ludwig Sound LS-275) 1977

Third Day, The - A New Way Of Life Began

Welcome Houston, Texas male trio of Wayne Perry, Don Palmour and Brian Runnels, serving up friendly melodic country rock originals. Has that familiar warm-hearted blend of electric guitar, piano, Arp strings and organ, putting them in the same general camp as folks like Heirship, Harvest, Aslan and Mountain Glory. Members of Redemption and Arkangel assist: Richard Conine is listed as producer, Kemper Crabb fills in on banjo, and David Marshall applies some tasty lead guitar to heavier electric tracks like ‘Fly’, ‘Freedom’ and ‘Trust Your Life’. Cool cover photo of the earth taken from the moon (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).

Third Day - Second Mile

Horn rock to be honest is not my favorite style, but there are a few that are worth hanging on to. Some that come to mind are Crimson Bridge, First Gear and of course Liberation Suite. Though I’m tempted to call Illinois’ 3rd Day a poor man’s version of the latter you could probably add them to the list, too. Eight guys in the group, two that play trumpet and two more on trombone. Mostly on the light end including a cover of 2nd Chapter Of Acts’ ‘When The Son Comes Over The Hill’. A couple adult contemporary type things (such as Floria’s ‘Thank You, Lord’) and tame jazzy pop that’s kept safe by the custom vibes and lack of strings, but there are also some more movin’ tracks like ‘Thunder N’ Lightnin’ (with vocal assistance from Russ Taft), ‘Jesus Is My Light’, ‘Now’s The Time’ and ‘Father Is Searchin’. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).

They Sing Of Jesus (Fnt)

Cross-label sampler lp featuring various British artists, produced in support of the upcoming Spree ‘73 concert (portions of which would be documented on the Live At Spree album on the Key label). Includes studio album tracks from The Advocates, Dave Pope, Malcolm & Alwyn, Parchment, Kevin Gould, The Alethians, Judy MacKenzie, Graham Kendrick and Garth Hewitt. In the slightly more traditional category are songs from Terry Dene, Jannette Carruthers and Betty Lou Mills. Nothing here that’s not available on their respective full-length lps, but a somewhat handsome package nonetheless. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).

Tell It Like It Is (Light LS—5512) 1969?

Tell It Like It Is

Contrary to what you might deduce from reading my write-ups, I do happen to enjoy some easy listening pop music every now and then. Good easy listening, that is. Easy listening with an edge. Some of my personal idols in the genre would be Free Design (of course), Sergio Mendes and Burt Bacharach. Ralph Carmichael impresses me as sort of a Christian version the latter. The songs are nowhere near as catchy as Burt’s, but the arrangements can be right up there. Ralph’s obviously a very important figure in contemporary Christian music, and having re-evaluated his music over the years I’ve often come to discover a unique quality to his projects. Tell It Like It Is, “a folk musical about God”, was co-written with Kurt Kaiser and is perhaps Ralph’s most popular work. How many countless groups have covered Carrnichael’s ‘Love Is Surrender’, or Kaiser’s ‘Master Designer’, “That’s For Me’ and ‘Pass It On’? Nineteen songs plus some small dialogue bits, all performed by the Kurt Kaiser Singers in a pseudo-flower-power pop/easy listening style, alternating choral and solo vocals. It’s still all a bit too happy for me and if this is “folk” music then so is the theme song from Love American Style. Personally I think the guys achieved hipper results with Natural High (see entry), nevertheless Tell It Like It Is remains a key album in the history of ccm. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).

Teen Scene (Charisma TS-101) 1969?

Teen Scene

Chances are if a Christian album has the word “teen” in the title, it’s going to be musically about as challenging as Lawrence Welk. Teen Scene sure ain’t rock and roll, but it has some points of interest. The album is a live performance that features four bands, each contributing three songs. I don’t know how enticing the piano gospel sounds of The Velvetones and Bill Murray & The Noblemen would have been to teens back then, but they’ve definitely got energy. Andre Crouch & The Disciples fare a bit better with their pumped-up r&b/black gospel influenced numbers ‘One Touch Of His Hand’, ‘Stand By Me’ and ‘Get Right, Church!’. The most contemporary of the bunch are Charles McPheeters & The New Creatures. They’ve certainly got the best look: four guys, two girls, three electric guitars and a drum kit (with the band name on it). All their selections have a ‘60s folk feel: ‘Turn Your Eyes To Jesus’ (female acoustic ballad), ‘You Can Tell It To Jesus’ (groovy folk-with-rhythm) and ‘My Lord’ (female folk/pop). Recorded at the Embassy Auditorium in downtown Los Angeles and emceed by Teen Scene” Gary Archer. Sleek cover design. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).

Teen Challenge Praise-In (Vibrant TG-1001-LP) 1970?

Teen Challenge Praise In

Independent production from Teen Challenge of Orange County whose ministry was aimed at narcotics users. From a music perspective, the album is primarily of interest for an otherwise unavailable track by Charles McPheeters. That track would be ‘Gospel Train’, an upbeat tune with fast vigorous electric guitar strums, performed live. The spoken ex-druggie testimonies from Bob Theisen, Bill Green and Larry Reed are pretty cool, too (some fairly hard-core dudes there). I can’t imagine too many teens tuning into the album’s remaining traditional quartets, trios and whatnot, but you never know. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).

Folk Gospel (Tailored Audio TS-104) 1969?

Four young ladies with short skirts and bouffant hair-dos along with two young men in sweaters, armed with guitars, banjo, bass and tambourine, looking like they came direct from the Patty Duke Show. Simple upbeat hootenanny folk style similar to early New Folk but with more of a home-made sound Actually kind of fun, believe it or not ‘Glory Glory’, ‘Amen’, ‘Jordan River’, ‘He’s Everything To Me’, ‘Sinner Man’, ‘I Believe’ – you get the picture. Reflections (Southern Cross SC 1005) 1971?

Owston, Chuck - Reflections

Totally home-made slice of blues-pickin’ gospel-preachin’ Americana. Begins with four down-to-earth acoustic folk-blues covers of ‘I Shall Not Be Moved’, ‘When I’ve Laid My Burden Down’, ‘Old Gospel Ship’ and ‘Nobody’s Fault But Mine’, with good rustic blend of guitar, dobro and harmonica. Next, the album totally shifts gears for three sermon-in-songs entitled ‘The Creation’, ‘The Crucifixion’ and ‘The Judgement Day’, featuring dramatic hell-fire readings over piano accompaniment. Get this: he even works the theme from ‘In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida’ in there! Closes with a traditional piano-backed version of ‘How Great Thou Art’. This here copy came in a cover with a generic sunset/tree photo, no text anywhere, totally blank on back. Chuck has also recorded some non-religious lps. See also Genesis One in the EP section. Gentle Breeze (Gospel Now Sound 102157/8) 1975?

Owens, Jon - Gentle Breeze

Talented black folk-singer and guitarist whose gentle acoustic style echoes the simple calm and beauty of Phil Keaggy. Everything you hear on Gentle Breeze is Jon, both the instruments and the vocal harmonies. He uses acoustic, classical, and 12-stiing guitars, mixing his own leads over-top the basic lines for that dual guitar sound Includes versions of songs by Debby Kemer (‘Blessed Be The Day’, ‘St. John 16:33’) and Malcolm & Alwyn (‘Fools Wisdom’). Many of the remaining titles appear to be originals, although only ‘Psalm 1’ (a beautiful moody ballad) is credited to Jon. ‘Julie’, another ballad, includes the sound of birds singing and wind blowing in the background. Nice guitar work and minor-key mood on ‘Jesus Is Coming Soon’. A rare custom album from Springfield, Ohio, with one of those generic sunset photos on the front. Straight Ahead (Sparrow SPR 1035) 1980

Owens-Collins, Jamie - Straight Ahead

Straight Ahead takes aim at an upbeat pop-rock style that mirrors Olivia Newton-John, with songs like ‘Fooled By A Feelin’, ‘Liar On The Loose’, ‘I’m Yours’ and ‘Holy Fire’ all hitting the mark. The ballads receive the predictable string arrangements, but at least one (‘I Have’) foregoes the orchestration to leave a nice acoustic guitar focus. Three of the songs were written or co-written by Gary Chapman, while another was co-written with Chris Christian, Participants include Hadley Hockensmith, Phil Keaggy, Richard Souther, Al Perkins and Matthew Ward. Jamie Owens-Collins-Love Eyes-front

Goodbye hippie girl, hello glamour lady. Despite its later date, Love Eyes holds back for the most part from overly slick ccm tendencies, staying true to a simple easy-going country flavored Jesus music sound, for which the title track, ‘Hidden Treasure’ and ‘New Day’ all fit the bill. Also the usual orchestrated easy-listening ballads. The rocking ‘Radio Man’ with its sharp lead electric guitar is a pleasant surprise. Includes several of Jamie’s songs, along with others written by Randy Boldt, Richard Souther (the piano ballad ‘It’s Been Quite A Year’) and Wendell Burton. Appearances by Al Perkins, Richard Souther, Tim Archer and Terry Talbot. (The Archivist, 4th edition by Ken Scott).
